Norfolk is for planners
As a first-time visitor to Norfolk, Virginia, I was pleasantly surprised the moment I disembarked my plane to find my luggage already waiting for me, followed by a quick Uber ride to downtown Norfolk.
Norfolk’s balanced blend of art—particularly glass art—and military presence provides visitors with a variety of interests and insight into history on many different levels, offering planners a variety of activities unique to the area.
The saying goes “Virginia is for lovers,” but it’s also for planners.
Where to Stay and Meet
Glass Light Hotel & Gallery may be one of my favorite hotels of all time. The rooms integrate elements of the city’s renowned glass art into the design, creating a distinctive and cozy atmosphere. The hotel’s adjoining gallery, filled with visually stunning pieces, also serves as an intimate meeting and event space.
Another great downtown option is Norfolk Waterside Marriott. Its proximity to key locations makes it highly walkable, and the indoor pool, bathed in natural light, is the perfect spot to relax after a full day of meetings.

Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel, located directly on the water, allows planners to take full advantage of picturesque waterfront views for their events.
For larger conferences, Hilton Norfolk The Main is highly recommended. Whether your group needs an expansive exhibit hall or smaller think-tank spaces, this venue offers flexible room sizes and a range of setup options.
Places to Eat

If you dine at Varia, located inside Hilton Norfolk The Main, ask about reserving the private dining room hidden behind a “secret” bookshelf entrance.
For a charming lunch or dinner, Omar’s Carriage House is a must-visit. On good-weather days, the adjoining tented patio provides a relaxed, airy setting.
Things to Do

For groups feeling particularly creative, consider visiting the Chrysler Museum of Art and its Glass Studio. The museum offers a vast collection of glass art, while the studio allows guests to view live glass-blowing demonstrations or even take part in hands-on classes. Fair warning: you may leave with a new passion for glassmaking.
Another unforgettable experience is the Virginia International Tattoo, a powerful showcase of performances featuring military bands, drill teams, massed pipes, drums and dancers.
For an immersive, educational experience, bring your group to Nauticus, a maritime discovery center that offers insight into careers in both the maritime industry and the military. Docked next door is the Battleship Wisconsin, which provides visitors with a fascinating glimpse into life aboard a massive naval vessel. The hands-on displays throughout Nauticus truly bring the maritime world to life.
Before heading to the airport, leave time for a visit to Norfolk Botanical Garden. Guests can enjoy a 30-minute tram tour through the lush grounds, and adventurous attendees can seek out the hidden “secret gardens” not listed on the official map.
If hunger strikes, several food trucks are stationed on site. During my visit, garden staff even arranged a ride for me on a mobile cart to the gate connecting the gardens to the airport, a rare and delightful travel experience. Bonus: They stored my luggage during my tram tour.
